As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.
After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at Rock Creek Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.
For the spring refresh, my team evaluates areas that need attention with a strong focus on first impressions. For example, the mulch throughout the community needed an update. We coordinated with our landscaping company to refresh the flower beds and improve the overall appearance of the property.

I also scheduled power washing and window cleaning for late spring. These projects will help the building look cleaner and more inviting for residents, families, and visitors.
One recent seasonal project focused on the raised garden beds in the Memory Care courtyard. With help from the Housekeeping Department, we added 70 bags of soil, planted flowers and greenery, and refreshed the outdoor space.
Residents and staff have been very pleased with the results. The project helped create a brighter and more enjoyable courtyard for the season.
The systems and checklists I use depend on the scope and type of project. I often collaborate with long-term staff members who have managed similar projects in the past. Their insight helps identify what has worked well before.
I combine their experience with my own to help projects run smoothly and efficiently. I also work closely with the Executive Director throughout planning and completion.
One common spring startup issue involves concrete repairs. I am currently obtaining bids for concrete work and partnering with the Executive Director to prioritize projects within the community budget.
Looking ahead to next season, I plan to focus on larger exterior improvements. These include paving the parking lot and repairing damaged sidewalk concrete. Both projects will improve safety and curb appeal throughout the community.

It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure Rock Creek Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
