Finding My Culinary Home in Senior Living

As Culinary Director at Rock Creek Senior Living, I approach each day with passion, not just purpose. I face new challenges, hear new stories, and find fresh reasons to feel grateful. I’m excited to share how I arrived in this role, what fuels my dedication, and what a typical day looks like in our community. My work goes beyond preparing meals—it centers on building connections, creating purpose, and making a real difference where it counts.

Senior resident and culinary director smile together while holding a colorful thank-you note decorated with drawings, showing gratitude for meals and care provided.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a chef. While attending college, I worked as a line cook and loved the craft. However, I quickly realized the restaurant hours weren’t sustainable. When I transitioned into senior living as a cook, I immediately knew I had found my calling. That first role eventually led me to become a Culinary Director.

What prepared me most for leadership at Arrow was starting on the line. That hands-on experience taught me the true value of every position in the kitchen. It also shaped my leadership style—I never hesitate to jump in and do the tough work alongside my team. That shared effort builds trust and respect, which makes all the difference.

Why I Love What I Do

What I enjoy most about senior living is the relationships I’ve built. I’m naturally outgoing, and this role has connected me with so many incredible people—residents, staff, and families alike. These relationships give my work deep meaning and a lasting sense of purpose.

Each morning, I begin by turning on the television, starting music throughout the community, and lighting the restaurant to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. After that, I check in with the kitchen staff to see if they need support. If everything is running smoothly, I dive into the rest of my daily responsibilities.

Advice for Aspiring Culinary Leaders

For anyone considering a culinary career in senior living, I offer this advice: Be patient and respectful. This is our residents’ home—a space where they deserve to feel comfortable, valued, and truly themselves. How we respond and interact matters deeply and can shape their day for the better.

To me, success means feeling proud of the work we’ve accomplished, knowing my team feels supported, and ending the day with no loose ends. That sense of fulfillment reminds me why I chose this path in the first place.

At day’s end, I take the greatest pride in knowing I’ve contributed something meaningful—whether it’s a favorite dish, a heartfelt conversation, or a comforting moment. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to serve at your table. I’m truly honored.
