Men’s Health Month was created in 1992 to raise awareness of the importance of proper screenings, early detection, and obtaining regular medical advice for men and to encourage young men to implement self-care and a healthy lifestyle. Studies show a significant difference between the health of men and the health of women, as men are less likely to seek treatment for preventable diseases. 

I feel there are barriers to men seeking treatment. They tend to feel it is a masculine norm to not go to the doctor because they are supposed to be tough or push through the pain. Also, men find it difficult to make appointments at times available to them due to work schedules and other obligations.

A few simple changes can be made to create a healthy lifestyle. Men can decrease the number of fast foods they eat that are loaded with sodium and unhealthy fat. Another change that can be made is drinking more water and less caffeinated beverages. Adding exercise to their day, even if it is just walking, can help create a healthy lifestyle.

Men can improve their overall health and decrease their risk for serious diseases and illnesses by going to the doctor for routine checkups. It is also important to schedule age-appropriate testing and screenings in order to catch any issue while it is in early stages.
