Building Safety Month takes place in May every year and is internationally recognized for raising awareness in keeping buildings safe.
This initiative unites industries, associations, academia, and government under a common goal to protect the public by creating a safe and resilient environment. Our primary focus as the Plant Operations Team at Rock Creek Senior Living Ankeny, IA is keeping our residents, visitors, and staff safe.
There are multiple tasks to perform to safeguard our community. I walk the perimeter of the building, looking for any broken or damaged doors or windows. When walking inside I will check all the exit doors for safety, including how they seal and if they are properly secured. I will check all the systems related to fire safety to ensure they will function properly when needed. This would include the fire doors, fire extinguishers, fire alarms, emergency lighting, and the fire suppression systems throughout the community.
As Plant Operations Director, I see it as a main focus of my position to ensure the security of the building and the safety of the residents and staff. I am proud of our commitment to fire safety and the ability to effectively evacuate our residents should a fire break out. The continued training each month helps to build confidence in both the staff and our residents.
I also practice building safety at home. I check the smoke alarms throughout my house and test them to ensure they are working properly. Our response plan is reviewed with my family, should the smoke alarms go off.
